Document translation in Poland is used both by foreigners and Polish citizens, depending on where the documents will be submitted. In practice, Polish regulations distinguish between sworn (official) translations and standard translations.

A sworn translation is performed by a state-authorized sworn translator and has legal force. It includes the translator’s signature and official seal and is accepted by public institutions. In most administrative procedures — particularly when submitting documents to government offices, courts, or educational institutions — a sworn translation is required. A standard translation does not meet these requirements and may be rejected.

For foreigners, translations are essential in residence legalization procedures, such as applying for a residence permit, citizenship, registering civil status documents, or starting employment. For Polish citizens, translations are mainly required when submitting documents abroad or using foreign documents in Poland.
